The surroundings of Taevaskoja village are one of the most beautiful places in Southern Estonia. The area may be characterised by its pure air and water, large and superb forests rich in diverse flora and fauna and the Ahja River with its magnificent sandstone outcrops. The place has been known for centuries for its beautiful nature and numerous legends.
In a cave called Neitsikoobas (Maiden’s Cave) there is said to be a flaxen-haired beauty hiding herself, who is weaving a beautiful cloth using a loom and who can be seen only if you know the secret words and have a fern blossom with you. In quiet evenings it is still possible to hear the clattering of the loom from time to time.
Emaläte (Mother’s Spring) has been considered a sacred place since ancient times. The water in Emaläte is cold, fresh and has healing qualities. Old people believed that if you washed your face 40 times with water from Emaläte, you would become seven years younger.
It is said that heavy coffers dating back as far as the Great Northern War have been hidden in the river at Saesaare. People say that in sunny weather it is possible to see a corner of the coffer if you look carefully.
Enjoy and preserve this beautiful place! Have a pleasant trip!
